What is Port Forwarding?

This is a unique feature which gives you access to devices and servers from anywhere. This technique is widely used to redirect computer signals between remote computers and the local network. In simple terms port forwarding allows you to access devices and service connected to the internet across the world.

This feature is able to process intercept data traffic of specific computer IP address and redirecting it to another IP address. Some of the devices used to redirect these signals are a proxy programmer, VPN and also hardware components such as firewall router and proxy server. The feature gives you privacy because you can send requests across internet services like Google without other internet users knowing your original IP address.

Types of Port Forwarding

The most popular used forms of this feature are the following:

1. Dynamic Port Forwarding

This is connecting your device to the internet servers through firewall pinholes. It gives a guarantee to secure connection with the trusted server which will act as an intermediary for receiving and sending data to many servers in different locations.

2. Local Port Mapping

It’s the most commonly used feature when compared to other types of port mapping. With this technique, you can connect internet servers to your pc easily. It sends data from different people application on the same device. Also, this feature is good for unblocking web pages blocked through the firewall.

3. Remote Port Mapping

It allows application based on the server side of a secure shell to access connection on the client side.

How it works?

When connected to an internet server where you are able to send and receive information packet data are created and sent. These Packets always consist of your device imp address location and other device details. Usually, when you are connected to a router it’s able to examine IP packet header then it sends the destinations to the appropriate location. Port mapping operates slightly different from the router.

This application reads the data via your VPN client and rewrites the data before sending or transferring to another server. The second server or computer is also known as secondary host always use a different IP address which will hide your original IP address with has your location.


Port mapping has challenges especially when you use manual set up of this application through a router. Most of your internet connection communications are not safe; there are quite a number of vulnerabilities associated with the use of port mapping without other security servers. It’s recommended this feature to be used along with pure VPN Add-on.
